Après Ski Essentials

Blog-Apres-Ski-Featrued-021216-v2

Whether you’ve just retired from a long day of racing your friends down the slopes or choose to hang out on the mountain sans skis and snowboard, ShoeBuy has all the Après Ski must-haves for looking chic and staying warm.

For Her

Outerwear: You really can’t get by without having a good, warm coat. Choose one that has fun details, a flattering cut, and great color. A warm puffy vest is also an option for the days above freezing. Layer it over a thick sweatshirt or sweater to show off some cool sleeves! Cozy Sweaters: A great winter sweater is also a ski staple. A crew neck with a quirky animal is lighthearted and serves as a great talking point. A knit poncho looks stellar with skinny jeans or leggings, and is easy to throw on over any top.

Black leggings are always a smart choice, but why not switch it up and sport a pair that has a little more pizazz? Stark White snow pants are perfect to transition from skiing to lounging while multicolored leggings in muted tones provide an elevated look without being too distracting. Layer a skirt over your leggings for a fun look that gives extra warmth and style.

Beanies are the perfect snow bunny accessory. Typically at lower price points, you can grab a different hat for all your go-to winter outfits. And remember, it may be cold out but the sun is still glaring throughout the winter, so grab a pair of sunnies to protect your eyes and make any look more fashion-forward. Gloves and arm warmers are great additions that can keep your outfit neutral, or add some pop! More winter accessories here.

Snow boots come in such a variety of styles now, with varying heights, materials, and colors. Mix and match your favorite winter socks with your boots for endless possibilities!

For Him

Outerwear: A vintage inspired vest is a perfect, easy layer that screams Après ski a la 1970s. You can’t go wrong with a classic black puffer coat either. Sweaters: Rich textures and soft neutrals make these sweaters ideal for relaxing with friends by the fire.

Two Toned snow pants are unexpected and modern. Dodge snowballs in style.

Boots: Waterproof duck boots will carry you through all sorts of slush you may encounter. A pair of sturdy snow boots with a heavy duty outsole prepare you for the iciest terrain.

A rugged hat and tartan scarf are classic investment pieces to wear every season. They are both masculine, and practical. Sporty beanies and cold-weather socks come in fun colors and patterns, so grab a bunch for a more youthful look.

A waterproof bag will take you far. Choose a bright color so it stands out in the snow! Roll up a blanket and bring it to the lodge to snuggle by the fire. Bringing the baby to the mountain? Try an adorable puffer onesie! A sophisticated print ensures maximum cuteness.

And for those of you looking for the toughest performance gear for the slopes, we’ve got you covered there too. A pair of compression tights or leggings increase circulation and reduces muscle damage and fatigue. Padded socks provide extra protection, and this pair has high density cushioning, for comfort around the entire foot and lower leg. A warm beanie built for winter sports is perfect for underneath your helmet. A form fitting base layer is essential to retain body heat, but isn’t going to be too stuffy.

The ShoeBuy Ultimate Running Guide for Winter

Blog-FeaturedImage-WinterRunning-012616-v2

Though it was certainly a little delayed this year, there’s no denying that winter is here. While a blanket of snow can be pretty, if you enjoy running outside for exercise, this can be an unwelcome reality (especially at 6 AM). Once the sidewalks are cleared, though, there’s really no reason you shouldn’t be able to enjoy the crisp air, just as long as you’re prepared from head to toe.

Running Shoes

For running shoes, look for breathable, moisture-wicking linings to keep feet cool and dry and a blown rubber sole to keep you steady on slippery surfaces. A running shoe that uses foam cushioning rather than mechanical will give you that extra pep in your step, which is especially important during the winter months when the ground is cold and hard.

Warm Running Clothing & Accessories

Before heading out the door, make sure you’ve layered on the proper protection. On top, choose a base layer of Merino wool that will keep you warm while still providing great breathability. Pair it with a zip-up – water-resistant for wet days and fleece-lined for the biting cold – to insulate and block out wind. On bottom, full-length pants (whether we’re talking compression tights or sweatpants – or better yet, both!) are the way to go. Remember: exposed skin is cold skin. Pile on those accessories – socks, hats, scarves – and don’t forget a pair of e-tip gloves so you can change the song on your playlist without missing a beat.

A winter jog can be refreshing, and especially after days on end cooped up indoors, sometimes a blast of cold air is just what the doctor ordered. However, if you are going to venture out, the proper gear is essential to your health and safety. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: layer! You want to be able to move freely but also shield your body from the harsh conditions, so look for materials that promote ventilation and will keep you warm, but aren’t too bulky.

Blog-Winter-Outerwear-3

Now that the last tricksters have treated and the clocks have turned back, it’s officially time to start thinking winter. While there’s still plenty of time between now and December 21st, once the days start to get shorter, they become cooler, too. As we finish out fall and head into winter, chances are your choice in outerwear will also begin to change. One day you may just need an extra fleece layer under your favorite vest or windbreaker to bring it to that next level of warmth, and the next, an all out parka to block out whipping wind and snow.

With that in mind, we give you: The ShoeBuy Cold-O-Meter. Depending on your needs this fall and winter, our experts have hand-selected the outerwear that will keep you at the perfect temperature until spring.

Winter Boots & Cozy Styles for Kids

Header-Kids-Winter-102915

Last week, we shared our favorite bundling picks for both men and women that are sure to keep the cold out and warmth in all season long. Next up: cozy choices for even the tiniest snow bunnies in your life. Wintery conditions don’t have to mean the end to outdoor play, and in fact, with the right gear, kids will be out building forts and making snow angels from the time they hear, “school’s closed” to, “hot chocolate’s ready!” Bonus: These will keep your little one’s warm but our picks are fun enough that they’ll make great holiday gifts too.

BOOTS TO KEEP THEIR TOES TOASTY
Make sure you’re really ready for those cold days and snow fort weather by getting them their winter boots and gear now, even if you’re thinking about wrapping them up as a gift! That way, when the first flakes fall, those little toes will stay toasty warm all the way from the bus stop to the sledding hill.

CLOTHING TO STAY COZY Insulation is key for winter, and these puffers will do the trick, keeping kids warm and fully protected from wind and wet conditions. And after a big storm hits, snowsuits are sure to bring hours of winter fun. Cool socks have become quite the fashion statement recently, and kids’ feet deserve to look good, too, but these picks mean nothing but business outside during recess.

WOOLY EXTRAS TO KEEP THEM WARM
Even though the theory (which likely dates back to experiments conducted in the 1950s) that you primarily lose body heat through your head has since been debunked, cold ears are nothing to joke about, so don’t forget a winter hat!

Got a techy kid in your life? Etip gloves will keep their hands warm without missing an important post or text. Or, keep it classic with tried-and-true mittens. Throw on an infinity scarf for an easy, extra layer of warmth that won’t get in the way of favorite snow activities.

The Top Layer: Fleece Favorites for Fall

100215-Fleece-BLOG-4

Can you believe it’s already fall? The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and the pumpkin spiced lattes are aplenty. Fall can be a tricky season though, and we’re not talking Halloween. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, and brisk evenings can make getting dressed for the day a curious task, as it’s sometimes difficult to prepare for the sudden changes in temperature that can occur. Thankfully, the practical solution in this situation is also a cute one (and not to mention, cozy): fleece!

We’ve gathered our top 5 fleece favorites for both women and men that are sure to become transitional staples in your closet this fall. Whether you’re headed out for an afternoon of apple picking, going for a run, or finding the early morning commute a little chilly, there’s a fleece for you.

Casual Cool

Grabbing coffee with a friend or checking out the new museum downtown? These his and hers fleeces from Merrell might be fuzzy, but they have the right amount of tailoring that you won’t leave you feeling under-dressed.

Classic

Sometimes, classic is best, and in this case, is sure to keep you warm. These familiar styles are timeless favorites with their pullover designs that block out cold without adding too much bulk. Plus, they’re made with recycled materials for an eco-friendly bonus.

Viva la Vest!

Vests are tried-and-true, and for good reason, too. Not totally convinced you need a coat but afraid you might get cold? Layer on a vest! This style provides the perfect amount of warmth without the restriction of a thicker jacket, so a vest is a great option if your plans involve a bit of movement.

Active Styling

Whether your activity of choice is a jog around the neighborhood or an afternoon hike through the woods, you really can’t beat this weather when it comes to outdoor exercise: not too hot, not too cold, it’s just right (where have we heard that before?). That being said, you often want an outer layer to protect you from the sun and wind that won’t weigh you down. A fitted jacket made with stretch fleece adds just the right amount of insulation for an active fall day enjoyed outside, and the unique grid pattern on this Mountain Hardware zip-up provides added warmth without becoming restrictive.

Comfy & Transitional

While all these picks are totally comfortable, we think these two take the cake for transitioning from inside to out with a bit of added style. The long funnel collar on this Royal Robbins number makes it like the cool older sister to your typical hoodie sweatshirt, while the lightweight fleece for men gives an effortless look with its clean lines and tailored fit.

Outfit Inspiration: Fleece & Layering

It’s layering season and we love it. One of our favorite things about layering is that it can bring together totally different looks. And of course, while the days may still be sunny and bright, crisp mornings and cool evenings mean it’s time to break out our favorite layering essential: fleece! When it comes to a warming layer, it doesn’t get much better than fleece’s soft coziness, plus it offers some of wool’s finest qualities at a fraction of the weight. Here’s a little inspiration to layer up in style.
