How To: Shop Wide Calf Boots

How to wear and shop wide calf boots
Shopping for that perfect boot can be so much fun. There are so many styles to choose from – riding, over-the-knee, Western, booties, and more! And this season’s selection is full of beautiful hues from amber to oxblood. But it can also be frustrating finding the right fit. For those of us gals with a little shape to our calves, we may need a little extra room. So, we chatted with our stylists to get their advice on how to make your next boot purchase the right one.

FINDING YOUR FIT
First, the good news is that options for a wider calf have never been better. Many designers now offer their top styles in a range of calf widths. The best place to start is to know what you need. The general rule is that if your calf measures 15 1/2” or more, a wide-calf boot will likely be the most comfortable option. So try measuring the fullest part of your calf or grab a pair of your tried-and-true boots and measure those around the inside at their widest part. This will give you a guide to go by when you’re checking out measurements on new boots.

FEATURES WITH FUNCTION
Next, you’ll want to consider features that will give you even more flexibility. Many tall boots are designed with elastic goring around the top or up the backside of the leg. This offers extra stretch for the leg fit. Also, if you’re on the cusp of wide-calf boot sizing, goring can help ensure the boot isn’t gapping too much. Boots with laces and buckles are worth checking out, too.

DON’T FORGET THE BOOTIE
Choosing your perfect silhouette is another smart way to shop for boots. While the knee-high boot may be the classic colder-weather go-to, booties are a great way to take the calf fit out of the equation altogether. Perfect with tailored pants or a skirt and tights, no shoe wardrobe is complete this season without a pair.
